Event: BIOnary Fusion and Bio Major Orientation
Hopefully, I was excused from my CHEM17 class under Sir Jong because I had to attend this orientation seminar for me to be able to apply for a major under the course program BS Biology. There are currently two majors listed under the program: Ecology and Cellular Biology (Cell Biology). For a few days/weeks now, I have been puzzled with what major should I be taking when I finally reach my major days and I have affixed in my mind that I'd be taking up Cell Biology.
But this morning, during the orientation, I learned a lot of things about the two majors. I learned both its similarities and differences.
Cellular Biology is more commonly known to be the major where in the student is contained in the lab. But the speaker (sorry, forgot her name) mentioned that:
hindi lang kami sa lab, may mga field trips din kami...
Actually, I wasn't after the field trips that the major could offer but the content. So during the brainwashing event, this is what I've learned about cell biology.
- it's true, that most of the time, students are just confined within the walls of the laboratory
- students do field work: they go out to the field, observe the natural habitat of an organism, bring it to the lab and within the lab, mimic it's natural environment for a better growth quality
- they dig deeper into the cellular level but it barely differs with what the ecology majors are studying
- you'd get to learn on how to use the laboratory apparatus properly
- accdg to pakdat: cell bio majors are SOSYAL and INTELLIGENT..haha:D
On the other side of the story, ecology major also had their own rebuttal:
- field trips galore!
- we value spontaneity: unlike in cell bio, they mimic the organisms natural habitat but as for ecology majors, they always prepare for natural calamities such as rain, therefore, everything they study in the field is the real world
- like cell bio, ecology majors also look into the cellular level
- for cell bio, most of the time, they are confined in the laboratory, but for the eco majors, THE WORLD IS THEIR LABORATORY
Now, do you understand me?
I am now in the middle of a dilemma on what major to choose. I like the outdoors but I like the laboratory as well. I want spontaneity but I want improving quality as well.
Hay ewan.
I really can't decide right now.
The last thing I've thought was really stupid.
I told myself that I would want to have Ma'am Novero to be my adviser because she specializes in tissue culture but I want to study Microbes as well where in supervised my Ma'am Vernaiz. But, upon looking at the application form, I saw that you could have two advisers therefore I could choose both Ma'am Novero and Ma'am Vernaiz. But unlogically combining the two topics, I come up with one statement that could be the topic of my thesis:
CULTURING THE MICROBES
And then, I think again. Who would want to culture microbes anyway?
